This quarter in 8th Grade Discovery we had to create our own utopian colony. For ourproject, we had to choose and incorporate: energy sources, an economic, political and
educational system, a constitution about why we founded it, and then build a 3D model
of it using recycled materials. This went along with the curriculum of learning about the
founding of the United States of America so we took it from the view of the settlers back
in the 1600s.
We named our colony Kai’ko which means ‘children of the sea’ in Japanese. Kai’ko is
located in the Northern Island of New Zealand in which we are surrounded by serene
waters and very green lands. Kai’ko is a very environmental conscience type of society;
we use geothermal energy, hydroelectric power, biomass energy, and solar energy. We
chose to be green because we noticed a myriad of toxins in our air that we breathe. In
Kai’ko, we focus on making the lands very safe. We enforce the law of being respectful
to enrich the generation to listen to their elders and the people surrounding them. This
corresponds with our colony motto which is: “If you respect the land, the land respects
you.”
Kai’ko hopes to enrich everyone’s life one person at a time. We hope that we in?uenced
