In the event of emergency weather situations, Hammond Academy of Science of Technology does the following:
1) We send an email to all HAST staff and students, as well as to the parents on our parent distribution list stating that the building will be closed.
2) We post an announcement on our website indicating that the school building will be closed.
3) We communicate our status as a closed facility to
www.emergencyclosingcenter.com. Anyone can check this site. This site shows the status of schools all throughout the Chicago area and Northwest Indiana.
These three steps happen at nearly the same time. We do this as soon as in advance as we are able, from the night before, up to 6 a.
casino arab m. the day of the weather emergency.
We base our closing on a few factors: road safety in Hammond and Northwest Indiana (we have many staff who commute from the region), weather conditions, and the status of other schools in the area.
HOWEVER…
Even though the building may be closed,
we run classes like a virtual day on these weather emergency days. Students can access assignments and teachers from their iPads, the home computers, their cell phones, etc. School is never really closed at HAST due to weather. Just the building is closed on such days.

Assignments are posted by 8 a.m. on these days.
If there is a family emergency on these weather emergency days, we ask that you communicate this as soon as possible to Gloria Valdez, the teachers, and/or myself as early as possible. You can also call 852-0500 x100 and leave a message.
Thank you very much!
